epo-square-shield.gifBoutiko has now been officially approved by the Ethical Products Organisation , a website whose aim is to “raise awareness of the ethical products available to shoppers and to enable shoppers to find online shops that are truly ethical with our organic directory.”

By ethical online shops they mean shops where all the products are either ethically sourced, traded or made. (That’s us!) The EPO features eco friendly products, Fairtrade products, natural and organic products, services and more. To those businesses that meet their criteria, they award a Shield of Authenticity, which you will now see proudly displayed on our homepage.

home-digger.gifThis is getting about a bit but I thought it was worth putting in because it’s such an accessible way to learn about what really happens between where stuff comes from and where it ends up.

The Story of Stuff with Annie Leonard is one of those cartoons that has very pleasing  sound effects and simple animations which illustrate the story Annie tells us. There’s something comforting about the way Annie tells the story, I think because it would appeal to all ages and is clear and precise, and as someone who is all about the visuals, the pictures really help to make it come alive.

Not to mention the important message behind it.

You may be interested to know that from 5th – 11th March is Lavender Week, a campaign started by the Lavender Trust to raise awareness of issues facing younger women with breast cancer. It is also a fundraising campaign, to enable greater access to the support and information which Breast Cancer Care developed specifically for this age group. With this in mind, we have decided that a percentage of all sales of our handmade goats’ milk Somerset Lavender Soap this month wiljmsomlav.jpgl go to the Lavender Trust. A good cause and a nice little Mothers’ Day gift rolled into one! This gorgeous soap is handmade in Somerset from ingredients that are all natural and organic, as well as locally sourced. Not only does it smell delicious and create a creamy lather; it comes beautifully wrapped in pretty fabric, to make the perfect token gift.

March is also the month of International Women’s Day (8th), Easter Sunday (23rd) and both the first day of Spring and World Poetry Day on the 21st.  I found this poem which seemed particularly relevant to this month:

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
